This plant is often used by beekeepers for planting around the apiary. Thickets of willowherb per 1 ha give 480 – 500 kg of honey, and in especially favorable years – up to 1000 kg (892 pounds per acre). The roots are edible and used as a vegetable, have a sweet taste. From the roots by fermentation are alcohol. The leaves are consumed as tea. They contain vitamin C. Seeds of fireweed can germinate in a variety of conditions. The main requirement – the proximity to the soil surface. Maximum germination occurs at a depth of 0.5 cm (0.2 inch). At a depth of 4 – 5 cm (2 inches) germination is no longer observed. This plant has exceptional ability of vegetative propagation, due to the long roots, giving the adventitious buds anywhere. This is a plant that is very sun-loving, unpretentious to soil conditions. But it is poorly competitive with other plants. In the United States and United Kingdom often Willowherb begins to bloom in the year of sowing. In Russia and Canada blooms usually in the second year. It blooms from June to September or July to August. The period of blooming is influenced by altitude, latitude, and rainfall. 0.6 gram contains more than 12,000 seeds.
